Common questions
Does an electrician need a state licence in Florida?
Yes. A business that does electrical contracting work for others must hold a state certification (EC, valid statewide) or a registration (ER, valid only where it was issued) under Part II of Chapter 489, Florida Statutes. Employees of a licensed company work under its licence.
What is the difference between EC and ER?
EC is a Certified Electrical Contractor, who holds a geographically unlimited certificate from the state. ER is a Registered Electrical Contractor, who registered locally and may contract only in the jurisdiction where the registration was issued.
Do I need a licensed electrician to install a generator or EV charger?
A permanent generator or a new 240-volt charger circuit is electrical contracting work, so it should be done by a licensed electrical contractor under a permit. Portable generators plugged in by the owner are different, but never connect one to the home's wiring without a proper transfer switch.
What does “Name mentions” mean on a profile?
It means a keyword such as Generators, Solar or EV charging appears in the business's own name. It is a hint, not a verified service. Ask the contractor what it installs and for examples of recent work.
Why is there no phone number for some electricians?
The state licence file does not include phone numbers. We list the address of record DBPR publishes; electricians who claim their listing can add a phone number and description.
Is this site run by the state?
No. Florida Electrician Check is an independent directory compiled from DBPR's public licence file. The official lookup is DBPR's Verify a License page at myfloridalicense.com.
